Shopify | Adding Products to Collections

So you've gone through the time consuming (and sometimes mind numbing) process of adding your products to Shopify, now you need to add these products to collections in a way that makes it easy for your customers to find them and buy them.

You can add products to more than one collection (and I usually do) and you can use manual collections or automated collections. My preference is automated collections because this reduces the risk that I will add a new product and forget to add it to a collection meaning my customers can't find it to buy it.

Adding Products to a Manual Collection in Shopify

I don't often use manual collections, but I do use one for the collection of products that I want to feature on the home page.

Go to Products > Collections and click Create collection. Add a Title and Description (the title will automatically be the collection's url and the description will show at the top of the collection above the products), under Collection type choose Manual.

Once you hit Save an option will appear to search for your products, use the search function to look up the products that you would like to add to the manual collection, select these products and click Add.

Repeat this until all the products have been added to the collection.

Adding Products to an Automated Collection in Shopify

Automated collections are my preference, because there are so many options to group similar products, and because it's much harder to forget to add a product.

Go to Products > Collections and click Create collection. Add a Title and Description (the title will automatically be the collection's url and the description will show at the top of the collection above the products), under Collection type choose Automated.

You can choose for items in the collection to match all conditions or any conditions (depending on the time of collection you are creating) and you can add products to the collection based on the following;

  • Product title
  • Product type
  • Product vendor
  • Product price
  • Product price
  • Product tag
  • Compare at price
  • Weight
  • Inventory stock
  • Variant's title

Adding a Clearance or Sale Collection in Shopify

Tag the clearance products with "Sale" or "Clearance". To do this, go to Products > All products and in the Products screen tick the products that you would like to tag.

Go to Actions > Add tags

Add tags to products in Shopify

In the tag window, either choose "Clearance" (or "Sale") from the existing tags, or type the tag into the box if the tag doesn't exist yet, then click Apply changes.

Choose clearance or sale from the product tags

Go to Products > Collections and click Create collection. Add a Title and Description (the title will automatically be the collection's url and the description will show at the top of the collection above the products), under Collection type choose Automated.

Under conditions choose "Product must match all conditions" and then;

  • Product tag is equal to Clearance
  • Inventory stock is greater than 0

Click Save.

The reason I add the condition about inventory stock is so that once clearance products sell out they disappear from the collection. As a customer it's much nicer to view a sale collection without wading through all the items that are no longer available.

Adding a Brand Collection in Shopify

Most online stores that sell products from other brands like to have the option for their customers to shop by brand. Brand collections are very easy to create using an automated collection.

Go to Products > Collections and click Create collection. Add a Title and Description (the title will automatically be the collection's url and the description will show at the top of the collection above the products), under Collection type choose Automated.

Under conditions choose;

  • Product vendor is equal to *choose brand name from dropdown*

Adding a Collection to a Menu or Submenu in Shopify

Once you have created your collections, you will need to add them to your menu (or submenu) so that your customers can easily find your products.

Go to Online Store > Navigation and choose the menu you would like to add the collection to. To add a collection directly to the menu, click on Add menu item. In the Add menu item window add the menu item name (eg: "SALE") and then click in the Link cell and choose Collections.

Choose collections from the add menu item window

Choose the collection that you want to link to the menu from the options.

To add a collection to a submenu, first add the menu item (eg: SHOP BY BRAND), and in the Link cell put a # (this will make the menu item an item that doesn't link to anywhere - this is handy for customers who are browsing online from a phone - most of them!).

Then click Add menu item. In the Add menu item window add the menu item name (eg: "The Best Brand") and then click in the Link cell and choose Collections choose the collection that you want to link to the menu from the options.

Back in the menu screen, click on the new sub menu item and drag and drop this item under the menu item.

Drag the submenu item under the menu item
